409 - SAN GIOVANNI BATTISTA PIAMARTA: LA VITA E LE OPERE

San Giovanni Battista Piamarta è stato un grande apostolo della carità a cavallo dei secoli XIX e XX. Dedicò la sua vita sacerdotale all’elevazione sociale e cristiana della gioventù bresciana, operando per quasi 50 anni in un ambiente difficile, ma lasciandoci nel contrattempo straordinari esempi di virtù. 

Nacque a Brescia il 26 novembre 1841 da genitori poveri e onesti: suo padre era barbiere, la madre, donna molto pia, ebbe un influsso decisivo sull’educazione del figlio; purtroppo morì quando egli aveva appena 9 anni. Fu affidato al nonno materno, persona dabbene, che ne ebbe molta cura: lo inviò a scuola e, nelle ore libere, gli faceva frequentare l’oratorio di S. Tommaso, nella parrocchia dei SS. Faustino e Giovita.  

Fu quello un ambiente provvidenziale per il santo: dotato di una bellissima voce di soprano, entrò a far parte del coro dell’oratorio partecipando soprattutto alle funzioni liturgiche; tutti ne rimanevano ammirati. Da allora la musica e il canto, che era del resto una tradizione di famiglia, gli saranno sempre cari: ne farà uno strumento di formazione per i suoi ragazzi.

Ultimata la scuola, fu impegnato come apprendista materassaio presso alcuni parenti, che ne apprezzarono subito la bontà, la diligenza e l’operosità. Tredicenne, conobbe il parroco di Vallio (BS), Don Pancrazio Pezzana, il quale si rese subito conto della sua disponibilità alla vita sacerdotale; ma, un po’ per la salute cagionevole, un po’ per mancanza di mezzi, Giovanni Battista dovette aspettare fino a 19 anni per entrare nel Seminario di Brescia. Qui, dal 1860 al 1865 si dedicò coscienziosamente allo studio, ma si distinse ancora di più nella pietà e nella disciplina. Il 23 dicembre del 1865 fu ordinato sacerdote. 

Per 18 anni e 10 mesi svolse un’intensa attività pastorale in qualità di Viceparroco: oltre tre anni a Carzago Riviera; quasi altri due anni a Bedizzole, con il suo benefattore Don Pezzana che ne aveva fatto espressamente richiesta all’Ordinario; infine per tredici anni consecutivi, a S. Alessandro di Brescia (dicembre 1870 – ottobre 1883), ancora con Don Pezzana che ne apprezzava le qualità sacerdotali. 

Fu proprio durante la sua permanenza nella parrocchia di S. Alessandro che il Piamarta rivelò le sue eccellenti doti e profuse le sue migliori energie. Si mostrò sempre obbediente, umile laborioso, illibato, devoto, povero e distaccato, fedelissimo nell’adempimento dei suoi doveri pastorali: catechismo parrocchiale alle varie categorie di fedeli, predicazione, confessioni, direzione dell’oratorio, con assidua assistenza e formazione della gioventù; visite ai poveri, agli ammalati; somma cura della liturgia e del decoro della chiesa, dove rinnovò gli arredi sacri a proprie spese, senza rivendicare mai nulla. Quando l’obbedienza lo chiamò altrove, fu un rimpianto generale. 

Il 20 ottobre 1883 fu nominato Parroco di Pavone Mella: trovava un ambiente difficile, dove la massoneria svolgeva opera sistematica di scristianizzazione. Con coraggio e generosità incominciò un’azione pastorale in profondità: catechismo domenicale, lotta al malcostume, oratorio per la gioventù, predicazione, confessioni, visite agli ammalati, assistenza ai poveri. Dava prova di avere preso sul serio la missione di salvare le anime e sentiva il dovere di guidarle con tutte le iniziative pastorali possibili, ma anche con l’esempio di una vita sacerdotale santa. Gli anticlericali lo combattevano, ma il popolo lo apprezzava molto e lo seguiva, e lo ricorderà sempre come un pastore «zelante, eccellente, ineccepibile in tutto».

Nel frattempo, per iniziativa di Mons. Pietro Capretti, amico del Piamarta, con la collaborazione del nostro santo, il 3 dicembre 1886 fu inaugurato in Brescia l’Istituto dei «Figli di Maria» per la formazione cristiana e l’avviamento professionale dei giovani: una iniziativa lodevole e necessaria, che porterà i suoi frutti, ma che intanto incontrò notevoli difficoltà a incominciare da quelle di carattere economico. 

Per due mesi il Piamarta fece la spola fra la parrocchia di Pavone Mella e l’Istituto. Poco dopo il Vescovo lo invitava ad assumere la direzione, rinunziando alla parrocchia. Pertanto il 1° febbraio 1887 lasciò Pavone Mella per prendere le redini dell’istituto «come direttore morale e disciplinare dei giovani» che allora erano soltanto quattro. E quando un anno dopo si parlava di chiudere, disse coraggiosamente al Vescovo: «No, Eccellenza, morirò qui con i miei giovinetti», che ormai erano già una ventina!

La sua carità e il senso di paternità, che lo sosterranno sempre nella sua missione fra la gioventù, andavano progressivamente affermandosi. Armato di fiducia incrollabile nella Provvidenza, di spirito di sacrificio, il santo affrontò povertà, rischi e fatiche con la benedizione dell’Ordinario. E fu così che divenne il vero fondatore dell’Opera, ribattezzata «Istituto degli Artigianelli», dopo la morte di Mons. Capretti. 

L’istituto si sviluppò meravigliosamente e rese incalcolabili benefici a tanti giovani, che altrimenti sarebbero rimasti abbandonati o quasi a sè stessi, grazie all’incondizionata dedizione del santo. 

Qualche anno dopo, nel 1895, ancora per interessamento del Piamarta e del parroco di Pompiano, Don Giovanni Bonsignori, sorse la Colonia Agricola di Remedello, per preparare cristianamente e tecnicamente i ragazzi della campagna desiderosi di coltivare la terra. Anche a Remedello il Piamarta tornerà spesso con la sua illimitata carica di umanità e di bontà.

La sua carità non conosceva limiti: nel 1900 fondò la Congregazione maschile della S. Famiglia di Nazareth, approvata nel 1902, per provvedere alla cura delle sue opere. Nel 1911 sarà la volta della Congregazione delle Umili Serve del Signore, per la formazione cristiana e professionale delle ragazze: due fondazioni che continuano ancora oggi la loro preziosa assistenza alla gioventù, nello spirito del Fondatore. 

Finché visse, il Piamarta continuò ad interessarsi premurosamente di tutti i problemi dei suoi Istituti, condividendone le gioie e le preoccupazioni quotidiane. Al tempo stesso, quando la salute glielo permetteva, attendeva specialmente alle confessioni, essendo assai ricercato da sacerdoti religiosi e laici. Pregava intensamente davanti al SS.mo e si preparava al grande incontro con Cristo, che sentiva vicino. Tema preferito delle sue lunghe meditazioni era la Passione e Morte del Signore: lo riteneva uno dei mezzi più efficaci anche per l’’adorazione eucaristica. 

Gli ultimi anni della sua esistenza furono un vero calvario: alla sciatica, dolorosissima, si aggiunsero disturbi cardiaci, di circolazione e di stomaco, insonnia ed emiplegie seguite ad attacchi di paralisi. Ottenne la permuta dell’Ufficio divino e il permesso di poter celebrare la S. Messa della Beata Vergine Maria e dei Defunti.

Il 9 aprile 1913, mentre era in visita alla Colonia di Remedello, ebbe un ultimo attacco. Intuì che l’ora suprema si avvicinava rapidamente e l’attese con serenità di spirito. Il 23 seguente chiese ed ottenne il S. Viatico che ricevette con grande fervore. Poi si addormentò placidamente nel Signore: erano le ore 8 del 25 aprile 1913. Aveva 71 anni e 5 mesi, spesi tutti per raggiungere il cielo!

A distanza di 13 anni, la salma fu traslata nella chiesa dell’Istituto degli Artigianelli, in segno di riconoscenza verso il benemerito Fondatore, a perenne memoria della sua eroica carità. 

La Congregazione della S. Famiglia di Nazareth oggi è presente in tre continenti: in Italia, Brasile Cile e in Africa.

“Se qualcuno vuol venire dietro a me, rinneghi se stesso, prenda la sua croce ogni giorno e mi segua”. E il padre seguì Gesù e salì il Calvario. La croce di padre Giovanni Battista Piamarta si chiama: fatiche, preoccupazioni, incomprensioni, problemi economici, malattie, difficoltà proprie di chi, in nome di Dio, ha fondato due Congregazioni, ecc. 

Ma ciò che bisogna sottolineare e che padre Giovanni Battista Piamarta non solo incontrò la croce ma la amò e ringraziava il Signore ogni qualvolta la incontrava. Infatti in una lettera a P. Zanetti, così egli scriveva “Non mancano, tuttavia, preoccupazioni di ogni specie e non sono poche né leggere, ma per tutto questo ringrazio il Signore …”

407 - THE MIRACLE OF BEATIFICATION

By Dr. Massimo Gandolfini, the doctor under whose care Bruno Cocchetti was placed

On the fourteenth of February, 1988 a student from Brescia, Bruno Cocchetti, who was eleven and a half years old was accidentally hit by a car. He received severe trauma to his face with an immediate loss of consciousness. He was promptly rescued and taken to the intensive care unit in the civil hospital of Brescia. When I visited him, I saw right away that his condition was serious: a deep coma that needed artificial respiration. The computed axial tomography was done immediately and others tests some hours later. They showed severe brain damage with hemorrhages and signs of endocrine hypertension. A surgical intervention would not have yielded any benefit. After about six hours his clinical condition worsened further becoming desperate due to damage to the brain stem. It was logical to expect an inauspicious outcome within a short time. At that time, I was an assistant at the neurosurgical clinic in the university of Brescia and unfortunately I had seen similar cases. I wanted to simplify the problem. There were two possible clinical outcomes: death or slow recovery of consciousness with serious neurological and physical disabilities. In these exact terms, I explained this to the parents and relatives of the boy. However, to my astonishment, the following clinical development began to contradict my words. Within forty hours the patient had started an unhoped for and unprecedented recovery that brought him to complete life autonomy: no neurological focal loss remained and the superior symbolic functions and psycho ­emotional life were perfectly normalized. I immediately had the impression/sensation that from a scientific, medical point of view something “exceptional” and “inexplicable” had happened. It was not his survival that amazed me (modern reanimation techniques allow us to save the life of these patients), rather it was the quality of perfect healing reached in such a short interval (the technical term is the “quod modum”of the “restitution ad integrum”). Therefore, I decided to carefully analyze all the international literature on this subject from 1970 to 1990, recruiting the involvement of other neurosurgeons and resuscitation specialists in this ponderous work. The accurate and scrupulous research essential for a serious and documented study brought us to this conclusion: in the clinical cases we have previously seen and treated, our scientific knowledge does not permit us to explain an outcome of total healing. There still remained some “black hole”. Something “scientifically inexplicable” happened stated Dr. Massimo Gandolfini, head physician and neurosurgeon, director of the neuroscience department of Brescia Hospital, member of the ethical commission of the association of physicians of the province of Brescia, and also consultant neurosurgeon of the Holy Congregation for the Cause of the Saints at the Holy See. The path to sainthood is long and winding. The Church, before lifting someone to the honors of the altar, requires proof and imposes checks and witnesses beyond any reasonable doubt. So it was for Father Giovanni Piamarta. On the morning of the fourteenth of February 1988, the eve of the feast of Saint Faustino and Giovita, patron Saints of the city of Brescia, Bruno left home and walked towards the middle school of Sereno, a village very close to his home. But, while he was crossing the street, a car hit him throwing him far. His condition immediately appeared desperate. The medical doctors of the emergency center transferred him to the resuscitation center with a diagnosis that did not leave any hope: cranial trauma with multiple injuries, deep coma and a state of shock. Near him, his parents were desperate - crushed by the pain. They fervently wished to pray, but did not know which Saint to pray to. An uncle Father Ettore Pelati, general bursar of the congregation of Father Piamarta, asked to his friend Gandolfini to take care of his nephew. “When I saw the boy, said the medical doctor and knew that the prognosis was so serious, I answered the priest that only a miracle could save this boy from death”. “I will ask to his parents and friends, Father Pelati replied to beseech the intercession of Father Giovanni Piamarta and to start a novena of prayers”. The prayer wound through the chapel of the Artigianelli Institution where Father Piamarta is buried, the church of Bruno’s parish and the chapel of the hospital. What medicine could not do, faith and prayers raised to heaven and beseeching Father Piamarta’s intercession did. Sixty days after the terrible accident, Bruno came back to school completely healed! This miracle opened the doors to Father Giovanni Piamarta’s beatification and canonization. In 1990 the Brescian Curia instructed the Diocesan process (legally approved by the Congregation of the Causes of the Saints) that would have recognized it officially. This happened when the medical council of the department, on the twenty seventh of June 1996, declared with unanimity that Bruno’s healing “was very fast, complete, durable and scientifically inexplicable”. After a few months and several tests the Congregation concluded that Bruno’s healing is to be considered “a miracle operated by God through the intercession of the Venerable Giovanni Piamarta”. So Giovanni Piamarta was proclaimed Blessed on the twelfth of October 1997 by John Paul II, who was also loved by the young and would also in the future be beatified. On that Autumn day among the five thousand people, gathered in Brescia to greet the newly beatified, Bruno was also present to show gratitude and love to the one who gave him his life back.

405 - AFTER ONE HUNDRED YEARS

Chapter Eleven

1. The Saints do not live only in God, but continue to live in their works, in their teachings, in the memory of those who met them, and in the hearts of those who benefited from them. Father Piamarta left a religious family that continues his work, cultivates his memory and makes him alive acting in accordance with his spirit.

2. In his last will and testament he had assured them that he would accompany his successors “by the heart of Blessed Jesus” and foresaw “the continuous progressive prosperity” of the work he had started.

3. One hundred years later, Father Piamarta's work continues among young boys in Italy, Brazil, Chile, Angola, and Mozambique, in centers of reception, professional formation, in assistance to “Meninos de rua”, in poor neighborhoods, schools, parishes, boarding schools and continues always with and for young boys following the evangelical counsel: “what you did to one of these little ones, you did to me”.

4. The imprint of Father Piamarta is found in the Spirit of the family and in collaboration with lay people. His congregation is dedicated to the Holy family of Nazareth and its members work hard to live as one family and face education as a good family would with the necessary comprehension of the issues of the boys, but also requiring the collaboration of all of them, and cultivating their sense of responsibility.

5. The collaboration of the lay people is due to the enlargement of the religious family. This requires certain competencies, a generous investment of personal energy, alumni who practice “gratitude as a major virtue”, a heart sensitive to the sufferings of the poorest, and people who are convinced that education is the most important and decisive task of the world. Why do you not also join in the work of Father Piamarta?

6. Also, the Christian culture was promoted and cultivated by the Queriniana Press, which contributed with its international opening to the renewal of the spirituality and the theological thought in accordance with the Spirit of the II Vatican Council. The first works of the theologian, Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI were spread in Italy by the Queriniana Press.

7. On October 12, 1997 the Church officially recognized the Holy and exemplary life of Father Piamarta, declaring him Blessed. The poor boy from Brescia entered into heaven rich, the humble priest was exalted by the Church and by the jubilant crowd of his sons, who toiled, suffered, and sometimes did not understand him. He entered into the ranks of those persons who can help us, who work to render the life of the young boys more human in the comprehension of their difficulties and their dignity as sons of God.

Let us pray:

O Merciful God, you roused in the Blessed Father Piamarta, your enlightened and fervent priest, a solicitude for educating young boys in living the Christian life, in having a job, raising a family, and contributing to society, concede that by his intercession we may live and act in your provident Fatherly love and feel the strength of your help as we strive to reach eternal beatitude.

Through Christ Our Lord Amen.
